Biography
Jerzy Becela makes small white objects: frames, boxes and cases of aluminium painted white, holding glass and paper. He draws in pencil and ink on paper, scratches drawings into glass with a stylus, and engraves sheet metal. Many of the works are letters or postcards addressed to “K.” He studied glass in Wrocław and worked for decades in cast lead glass; the recent works are quieter, made in the studio in Pszczyna.
He was born in 1947 in Ruda Śląska – Kochłowice and graduated in 1974 from the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław, in the studio of Ludwik Kiczura. A member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP) since 1982, he received first prize in “Dzieło Roku ’91” and a Ministry of Culture scholarship in 2000.
